Advanced - Applied Science

AIMS
Students in Years 12 and 13 will have an opportunity, through applied learning, to develop the core specialist
knowledge, skills and understanding required in science and other related industries.

COURSE SUMMARY
Students will undertake 5 units that cover the core skills and knowledge that underpin scientific understanding and practical applications. There are 2 external assessments, and 3 internally assessed assignments over the two-year course.
Unit 1: Science fundamentals
Content covered: atomic structure, chemical reactions, biological systems, cell structure, principles of carbon
chemistry, inorganic chemistry, properties, and uses of materials.
Unit 2: Laboratory techniques
Practicals and skills covered: health and safety risk assessments, separating techniques, titration, preparing microscopic slides, ion testing, aseptic techniques in preparation of bacterial cultures.
Unit 6: Control of hazards in the laboratory
Understand the legal requirements in a laboratory and identification of hazards to minimize risks.
Unit 18: Microbiology
Understand the use of microorganisms in food production and in medical microbiology.
Unit 21: Product testing techniques
Use a range of laboratory techniques to investigate how food products are tested.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Two grade 4s in science and a grade 4 or above in English and Maths. An average point score across all
GCSE subjects of 4+ (there is no need to have studied this course previously).

BEYOND SIXTH FORM
This qualification will complement a programme of study containing other science or STEM-related courses including those from other vocational sectors such as Sport or Health and Social Care. The Applied Science Extended Certification would also act as a gateway to other industries such as: food standards agencies, environmental agencies, microbiology,
and pharmaceuticals.
