Advanced - Core Religious Education

AIMS
At KS5 students are also given the opportunity to explore their own faith and world view through our Core Religious Education Programme. Core RE is a non-examined subject which all students attend. Students have one lesson per week on their timetable during which they engage in the study of a range of different religious and non-religious views, exploring topics in Theology, Philosophy and Ethics.

COURSE SUMMARY
Students are encouraged to think critically, self-reflectively and to continue their own faith journey.
Through discussion and debate, students will develop their analytical and evaluative skills and will engage with
a range of academic literature to further their own thinking.
Students value the opportunity to discuss a wide range of topics that explore the place of faith in the modern
world and current issues that are relevant to them, including:

Liberation Theologies (including Black Liberation Theology, Feminist Liberation Theology and LGBTQ+ Liberation Theology)

Human dignity and human rights

Religious persecution

The Problem of Evil and Suffering

Religion in the modern world

The course also allows students to take a leadership role and be actively involved in the wider life of the school. For example, through an exploration of religious persecution around the world, students have led assemblies to each year group on the work of Aid to the Church in Need and supported the school’s marking of Red Wednesday to stand up against all forms of persecution and discrimination.
The course allows students to develop skills and knowledge which will serve them in whatever their chosen path is beyond A-Level study and will enrich their lives with meaning and purpose.

ASSESSMENT
The course is internally assessed in a variety of ways, through extended written responses, class discussions
and presentations. Students will have the opportunity to receive feedback and make improvements to their
work.
