AIM OF THE COURSE
Our aims are to encourage your interest in history, extend your knowledge, develop your skills of
understanding, analysis, and written communication, and ensure you achieve the best A Level grade you can. Students are required to:

study the history of more than one country.
▶
study a British history option and a non-British history option.
▶
There must be a 200-year time gap between the 2 units.
YEAR 12 AND 13 EXAMINED UNITS
Unit One: The Tudors: England, 1485–1603
The Usurper King Henry VII, notorious kingship of Henry VII. Religious change, domestic and foreign policy. Mid Tudor Crisis; Boy King Edward, Bloody Mary and the Golden Age of Elizabeth I. This option allows students to study in breadth issues of change, continuity, cause and consequence through a study of the Tudor monarchy and government.
Unit Two: The Cold War, c1945–1991
International relations between communist and capitalist powers which threatened nuclear Armageddon. Explores political ideologies and détente. Encourages students to reflect on modern military power and provides an insight into current events. This option provides for the study in depth of the evolving course of international relations during an era of tension between communist and capitalist powers which threatened nuclear Armageddon.
YEAR 12 COURSEWORK
An independent, research led, investigation on a topic of your choosing. 3,500 words. This is an opportunity to really explore the areas of History which most excites you. This coursework is an excellent exemplar of an independent extensive task that appeals to both employers and universities. This is also a brilliant prospect to research an area of your own interest with subject experts.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The A Level qualification is highly valued for university courses in all subjects. If you choose to specialise in
history at university, however, you don’t have to be a historian! A History degree can lead onto careers in
journalism, the law, the media, the armed services, the police force, management, the Civil Service, advertising,
business, teaching...past students are making successful careers in all of these areas.
COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You must have studied this subject at GCSE in order to take it for A Level. You should have achieved an Average
Point Score across all your GCSE subjects of 5+ and a grade ‘6’ in this subject.
BEYOND SIXTH FORM
