AIMS
Students in Years 12 and 13 will have an opportunity, through applied learning, to develop the core specialist
knowledge, skills and understanding required in sport and physical activity.
COURSE SUMMARY
Students will undertake 5 units that cover the core skills and knowledge that underpin sports science understanding and practical coaching applications.
There are 2 external assessments, and 3 internally assessed assignments over the two-year course.
In this unit you will gain an understanding of the structures and functions of the key body systems, how
these support and impact performance in sport and physical activity and the effects that physical activity,
training, and lifestyle can have on them.
Unit 2: Sports coaching and activity leadership
This unit will give you an understanding behind the theory of what makes good sports coaches and activity
leaders and methods that can be employed to improve the performance of participants.
Unit 3: Sports Organization and Development
In this unit you will gain an understanding of the organizations involved in sport in the UK, their roles and responsibilities and how they work together.
Unit 8: Organization of Sports Events
This unit is designed for you to develop skills in planning, promoting, and delivering a sports event; with a focus primarily on your individual role as well as working as part of a team and reflecting on your input and future personal development.
Unit 19: Sport and Exercise Psychology
In this unit you will learn different motivations that people have for participating in sport and exercise and how performance can be managed through an understanding of attribution theory, stress, and group dynamics.
COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A 4 or above in GCSE PE or L2M in BTEC/CNAT or two grade 4s in Science and a grade 4 or above in English and Maths. An average point score across all GCSE subjects of 4+ (there is no need to have studied this course previously).
This qualification will complement a programme of study containing other science or STEM-related courses including those from other vocational sectors such as Applied Science or Health and Social Care. The Sport and Activity Extended Certification would also act as a gateway to other industries such as: personal trainer, fitness instructor, recreation or leisure assistant, sports coach, activity leader, coaching.
