Advanced - Physics

EXAM BOARD: AQA

AIM OF THE COURSE
The AQA Physics course is one of the most respected Physics course available. It uses contexts and
applications to maintain interest and motivate students and highlights for them some of the many career areas
that involve Physics. The course is designed to allow a smooth transition from the GCSE Science courses.

YEAR 12 SUMMARY
This consists of 6 sections. Particles and radiation, Electromagnetic radiation and quantum phenomena,
waves, mechanics, materials and electricity. Particle physics introduces students to the fundamental
properties and nature of matter, radiation and quantum phenomena. Waves characteristics and there
applications are studied including ideas such as refraction, diffraction and super position. Materials are
studied in terms of their bulk properties and tensile strength. Electricity further promotes practical work
and important applications.

YEAR 13 SUMMARY
This consistent of studying mechanics further to study circular and simple harmonic motion. Fields such as
gravitational, electric and magnetic so that concepts studied in year 12 can be developed further.
Radioactivity is also covered to see the real life applications that can impact our everyday lives.
An optional unit is also covered which is Turning Points.

ASSESSMENT
Practical work is completed throughout the course to further develop understanding.
Paper 1 consists of Year 12 work along with some further mechanics. Paper 2 consists of Year 13 work.
Paper 3 contains questions on practical work covered throughout the course as well as astrophysics.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of two grade 6s or above in GCSE Combined Science or three grade 6s or above in
Separate Sciences. In addition, a grade 6 or above in Maths and an average GCSE points score of 5.5.

BEYOND SIXTH FORM
Physics is a respected academic subject whose graduates are much in demand. It is also an essential subject for further study in Engineering, Astronomy and Robotics. Physics is a useful subject for careers in Medicine, Law and Business.
