Advanced - Sociology

EXAM BOARD: OCR

AIM OF THE COURSE
Sociology is the study of human behaviour, focusing on how groups in society interact. We study society’s diversity, examining different cultures, ethnicities, beliefs and values.
We also study inequality in society, considering why some groups have different life experiences than others
and the impact that this inequality can have, for instance on education and crime.

YEAR 12 SUMMARY
Unit 1 looks at key Sociological concepts, such as ‘What is culture?’ and ‘What is identity?’ The Sociological
focus of unit 1 is on the family and the diversity of family structures in the UK. We consider patterns and
trends in the family over time for example, family size, rates of marriage and rates of divorce. Students will
search for explanations as to why changes in the ‘typical’ UK family exist.
Unit 2 examines inequality in society, assessing social groups such as gender, class, ethnicity and age.
Students will develop an understanding of Sociological theory and what Sociological research has shown in
regards to inequality in our society. The theoretical perspectives they will critique include Functionalism,
Feminism, Marxism and Postmodernism.

YEAR 13 SUMMARY
Unit 3 and revision. Unit 3 is entitled ‘Debates in Contemporary Society’. In the exam, students will consider the impact of modernity on the modern world e.g. globalization, digital communication, social media and technological advances. Students will develop an understanding of how these advances in society are shaping us in terms of our morals and values, relationships, education and learning of the world around us. Debates will include standpoints as to
whether these technological advances have been a hindrance or a help to our society, requiring students to
imagine what the consequences of such an advanced world may be.
