Key Stage 3 (Years 7-8)
During Year 7 all students follow Studio 1. This is a modern course which includes video clips, authentic resources and Active Teach, which allows teachers to direct students easily through the tasks. In Year 8, students follow a differentiated course according to ability (Studio 2 Vert or Rouge).
Key Stage 4 (Years 9-11)
In Years 9, 10 and 11 many students will study a Modern Foreign Language to GCSE level as part of the EBacc. Students may study either French or German or both languages. Students may begin German in Year 9 as a GCSE course. Students follow the AQA GCSE course with grades from 9 to 1.
Key Stage 5 (Post-16)
We offer French at A Level, when there are sufficient numbers of students. We follow the Pearson Edexcel course. Students have individual lessons with the Foreign Language Assistant to help improve their oral skills. There is also the possibility of doing a work placement abroad in Year 12.
Extra-Curricular Activities
There is an opportunity for Key Stage 3 students to attend a French play organised by the Onatti Theatre Group or to take part in a role-play or spelling bee competition. Year 9 students may be selected to represent their school in a French quiz. Every year there is a four day trip to Paris for Key Stage 4 students where they can experience French culture and practise their language before their GCSE exams.
Useful Links
We subscribe to Linguascope, which offers a wonderful variety of language games and activities at different levels. Students should ask their teacher for the school’s username and password.
Students in Years 7 to 11 who study French also have accounts with Active Learn, allowing them to complete extra listening, reading and vocabulary tasks at home. If you have forgotten your login details, please speak to your French teacher.
German students use Kerboodle to support their learning. They can access this from home for extra practice. The school code is ho9. If you have forgotten your login details, please speak to Mrs Bell.
Finally, students in Year 10 and 11 can use Vocab Express to improve their vocabulary. Each student has an individual login and password. The school code is UKSTACS. We run regular competitions within school to see who can learn the most vocabulary. We also participate in national and international challenges which run for a week at a time.
