Educational Visits
At St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School we are proud to offer a variety of exciting extra-curricular activities.
All of our year groups have the opportunity to attend a residential visit as well as many day visits. Our overseas programme includes visits to Paris, Belgium, Lourdes and even as far away as Tanzania.
We have one of the largest Duke of Edinburgh programmes in the West Midlands and offer from Bronze to Gold level. Here we have listed our main visits that occur annually so you can have a flavour of what we offer. This list is not exhaustive and is subject to change.

This is a long-standing residential trip which has moved from the well renowned Ogwen Cottage (which closed in 2013), many ex-students will reminisce about this trip with fond memories with tails of how it changed their lives for the better. We take Year 9 students for a 5 day residential to Snowdonia to part take in a range of outdoor education experiences. They complete activities which challenge and take them outside of their comfort zones, tailor made to the group, giving them the skills to persevere and uncover talents they did not know they have. It builds on their team building and leadership skills and introduces them to activities that they will rarely be able to experience in everyday life in a setting far removed from the city life we are used to. This is a fantastic trip which I highly recommend everyone apply to come on. |

The award takes 6 months to complete and is divided into four sections: volunteering; physical; skill and expedition. Students must complete the volunteering, physical and skill aspects for 3 months and then choose one of these to carry on for a further 3 months. The aim of the expedition is to inspire students to develop initiative and a sense of adventure by planning, training for and completing a 2 day 1 night hike. Students meet regularly to work on teambuilding, learning camp-craft skills, navigation, route planning and emergency and first aid procedures. Students complete a practice expedition in Earlswood and then their final expedition in the Clent Hills for their qualifying expedition. |

Gold DofE
|
|
The Duke of Edinburgh Award at Tommies began with enrolment in 2006, with a cohort of 13 6th Form students. The two groups undertook their practice expedition in the very challenging Dark Peaks and were successful enough to be put forward for their Qualification in the Brecon Beacons. During their time on expedition the weather became inclement and both groups on the 3rd day found challenging weather in the form of thick fog with one group ending up camping up on the hills overnight. The very 1st person to complete the whole of the Gold Award was Naomi Austin who received her Award at St James’ Palace in the presence of the Duke of Edinburgh himself. From that initial cohort of 13 we have had 4 successful finish the Award as a whole and just this year (2016) some eight years after their expedition, Mr O’Sullivan finally completed all his sections and will be going to the Palace also this year to pick up his well-earned Award. To date, we have had 12 students complete their Gold Award and are hoping to put forward another 10 students to head off to the Palace. Last year we enrolled another 28 students – twice as big as any cohort before, with the expectation that we will have 20 pick up their Award next year. All these achievements would not be so successful without all the staff, who have given up their time and effort, from Bronze through to Gold – I thank you all. |

Every year, the Sixth Form have the opportunity to join the Birmingham Diocesan annual pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in Southern France. Millions of pilgrims visit Lourdes each year since the apparitions in 1858 where Mary appeared to St Bernadette 18 times. Lourdes has since become renowned as a place of healing and the Catholic Church has recognised a total of 69 miracles having taken place there. Students travel to Lourdes during the May half-term, where they volunteer serving sick and elderly pilgrims. Students have the opportunity to live out their faith in a very direct way and work in a privileged position supporting and caring for those who are less fortunate than themselves. Students often find working with the pilgrims a humbling and rewarding experience. Throughout the week there are also many opportunities to visit other places of interest and meet young people from across the Diocese. |

Duke of Edinburgh
Introduction
The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme has been part of life at St Thomas Aquinas School since 1995. It was set up that year by Mr John Houston and myself, supported by many other members of staff, particularly Mr Ted Boodell, Mr Alex Flood and Mrs Mary Edmunds.
We started with 35 students from Year 9 and 10. Mr Houston led the Expedition and Physical Recreation elements, while I coordinated the Skills and Service elements. For their Service activity, students took part in a British Red Cross First Aid course after school, a police course, or an evening course at Kings Norton Fire Station. I have wonderful memories of our first Bronze Expeditions, based at Clent and Earlswood. The Award was extremely popular and fortunately we were soon able to buy more equipment, allowing us to give this opportunity to more of our students. By 1997, we also had a Silver Award group, with expeditions to the Long Mynd in Shropshire. There were always difficulties (including Mr Houston’s inability to put the minibus into reverse for the whole 3 day expedition) but also a fabulous sense of development and achievement.
I am delighted that the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme has gone from strength to strength in our school and is still offering our students the chance to develop their skills and their resilience 25 years after it was first established here.

DofE Gold
Introduction
Gold DofE got off the ground in 2005 with Mr Baker and Mr Flood taking students on expeditions to the wilds of the Dark Peaks and the Brecon Beacons.
Since the early days of Bronze being introduced by Mr Houston and Mrs Bell in 1995, the Award has gone from strength to strength with Silver introduced shortly afterwards in 1997.
In 2005, the Gold Award was introduced by Mr Flood which has seen many of our students (and staff) attending St James Palace to be presented with their certificates.
It's hard to believe that since those early days in Earlswood on Bronze camp with 35 students, that we have now surpassed our 1000th participant on to Award.
A huge thank you to the staff who volunteer their services and making this possible.
Mr Flood
Head of Sixth Form

The Gold Award Presentation that officially finished my DofE journey, made all the emotional and physical challenges I endured even more worthwhile! The journey has helped me to develop and grow into the person I am today, and has taught me valuable lessons in life, including what my capabilities are. It sure is a personally developing journey, which I would recommend to everyone!

DofE Silver
Introduction
Students in Year 10 have the opportunity to begin the silver Duke of Edinburgh Award when they reach the age of 15. The Award is offered as an extra-curricular activity and is a good opportunity for students to develop their personal skills, meet new people, discover their potential, learn new skills and face new challenges. Above all, successful participants will gain an extra qualification which will help them stand out when applying for college, university and job applications. The award takes 12 months to complete for direct entrants and 6 months for those who have achieved their bronze award. In order to complete the award, students must undertake volunteering, participate in a physical activity, learn a new skill and complete a three day, two night expedition.

Saturday 2 June 2018 DofE Silver Practice Expedition to Clun - June 2018 Bright and early on Friday morning, 10 students and 3 staff left school at 7am to head off to the England–Wales border to commence their initial training expedition. By the time we had got to Clun, the weather had turned, but the students were still in good voice and eager for the day ahead. The students started walking by 9.30am in the rain but this didn’t dampen their spirits and both groups made an impressive start to their navigating, and it wasn’t long until the sun made an appearance. During the first day, the students were taught the art of using a compass to find their direction of travel and also to locate where they were, using features from the landscape. By the time the groups got back to camp, some students ended up erecting their tents as the sun was setting whilst all cooked in the dark. Remarkably, the food was fairly edible too.

Saturday 2 April 2016 Duke of Edinburgh Silver Expedition – April 2016 Sunshine, snow, crystal clear views, hail, strong winds and soothing sunsets - the latest Duke of Edinburgh Expedition had almost everything the British weather could offer. On Friday 29th April, nine Year 11 students, Reyan Al Rewi, Mia Bennett, Louisa Osei, Judyth Last, Nils Heising, Aidan Richards, Luke Conaghan, and Hannah Kenny embarked on a 3 day trek through the beautiful Long Mynd hills in Shropshire. These walkers had already shown exceptional stamina in the practice expedition 2 months earlier around the hills of Clun. This was the assessed expedition however, and the students would have to rely on their own team work to navigate the significant distance required to meet the Silver Duke of Edinburgh standard. Team work and stamina were only a couple of the qualities on display as all participants came through the challenge with flying colours, spirits still high and looking capable of completing a good few miles more. The pace of their progress through the often steep terrain

DofE Bronze
Introduction
Students in Year 9 have the opportunity to begin the bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award when they reach the age of 13. The Award is offered as an extra-curricular activity and is a good opportunity for students to develop their personal skills, face new challenges and have fun, whilst also gaining an extra qualification, which will make them stand out when applying for college, university and job applications.
The award takes 6 months to complete and is divided into four sections: volunteering; physical; skill and expedition. Students must complete volunteering, physical and skill aspect for 3 months and then choose one of these to carry on for a further 3 months.
Volunteering is about making a difference to the local community and serving others. This could involve helping out at a local charity or community organisation, coaching others or improving the environment.
The physical section is about improving fitness levels and living a healthier lifestyle by taking part in a physical activity. Participants can use the school gym, join a sports team or undertake an individual sport.
The aim of the skills section is to learn a new practical or social skill, like learning to play an instrument, cooking or first aid.
The aim of the expedition is to inspire students to develop initiative and a sense of adventure by planning, training for and completing a 2 day 1 night hike. Students meet regularly teambuilding, learning camp-craft skills, navigation and route planning and emergency and first aid procedures. Students complete a practice expedition in Earlswood and then their final expedition in the Clent Hills for their qualifying expedition.

Wednesday 2 December 2015 Bronze Duke of Edinburgh - Blackwell Last weekend, 46 students headed to Blackwell to undertake their qualification expedition of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Despite the dismal weather on Saturday, students were in high spirits and ready to take on the task ahead. Whilst navigating around a 24km route, the students were being assessed on a range of skills including navigation, teamwork, leadership and camp-craft skills. Students responded well to the challenges of the expedition and this is what the award is all about - perseverance, team work and challenge. Thankfully, the weather picked up on Sunday and so did the pace of the students! This is when we see our students at their best and each group should be proud of their achievements. Well done.
